Photographs of historical performances store valuable information, but their interpretation is also a fraught process. Accessing the knowledge they offer requires a methodological framework to prevent ourselves from projecting our knowledge into the photograph, as opposed to learning from it. This essay proposes such a framework, drawing on theories in semiology and iconology to produce guiding questions for image analysis.
