Technical Objects in the Biological Century

Abstract

How does a computer operating system such as Linux diff er from a microbe? This paper explores how technical objects are envisaged in the »century of biology«. Via the work of Gilbert Simondon, it asks what modes of existence biotechnical objects will display. The processes of abstraction and concretisation taking place in the fi eld of synthetic biology off er one way to address these questions.
