Making Time Work: Ethnographic Explorations of Temporal Experiences in Delivery Work

Abstract

This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork among food delivery drivers in Vil- nius, Lithuania. The fieldwork included working as a food delivery driver for two delivery platforms. I discuss how the riders engage with the temporal structure of delivery work, which determines the day-to-day experiences but also permeates their work lives. While some drivers’ actions aimed at creatively manipulating platform temporalities seem likeare income maximization strategies, others can- not be reduced to financial motivation. Focusing on temporal agency, I examine how riders craft narratives around time, using them to draw boundaries with the platform, establish themselves as hard workers, and create a sense of meaning.
