Abstract

Extreme nationalist, right-wing, and racist positions have an increasing presence in political discourse, and the new right claims is claiming space in the university with ever-greater urgency. This article focuses on Germany, but similar things could be said about all of Europe and the United States. Grounded in the theories and methods of the humanities, the contribution discusses how this increased presence concerns us as university members. The discussion sketches three dimensions of engaging with the presence of the New Right at the university: analyzing the public debate about how universities have responded to the New Right, developing argumentative positions grounded in academic ethics, and reflecting upon the university’s own institutional policies. The argument is conceptualized less as a reaction to the new right than as an engagement with the question of what kind of university we envision.
