Mind Control ohne Controller. Eine medientheoretische Interpretation von Fetisch und Kapital bei Karl Marx

Abstract

If commodity, money and capital are understood as medial forms, capitalism presents itself as a system in which domination emerges from their inherent laws. Thus, the essay portrays Marx as a media critic ‹avant la lettre›: the fetish of the value forms arises when the mediation that constitutes them vanishes behind a thing-like appearance. In the movement of capital, value is transformed into an ‹automatic subject› and the people’s own actions become an external compulsion for them. Capital processes like a cybernetic system. This structural homology with digital systems in turn explains the potent synergy of the two in digital capitalism, whereby the economic laws appear to structure the algorithms.
