Ranking, Sorting, Classing. Klassifikation und Klassenkampf um 1700

Abstract

While the classificatory division of people in the 17th century was received as imposed ‹top down› by sovereignty, and therefore was exposed to resistance, the new media of the public in 1700 upheld the practice from the ‹bottom up›. A pop culture of classification made the principles of classist order socially acceptable. At the same time, the concept of class began to take on connotations of conflict. The later history of the class concept, its oscillating between bureaucratic differentiation and combative assemblage, was therefore already adumbrated.
