Abstract

‹Dispersal› often serves as an umbrella term for different phenomena of suburbanization. Whereas it is usually explained by economic, ecologic and social factors, the articles treats a discourse that depicts the concept of dispersal as a matter of defense. This includes a series of proposals made by planners between 1945 and 1955 who suggest an optimal distribution of the American population. Within this discourse, nuclear power has a double function. On the one hand, the fear of atomic extinction marks the beginning of these efforts; on the other hand, the plans are based on technological infrastructures which could only be realized by use of an inexhaustible nuclear energy. Therefore, the article discusses technological conditions of dispersal as well as its oscillation between utopia and dystopia during the hot phase of cold war.
