Article:
Zen und die Kunst jeden Mangel zu reparieren

Abstract

The essay begins with the skeptical question of whether the practices of repairing and the knowledge they embody can be clearly assigned to historical epochs at all, or whether they are not rather timeless cultural techniques? Working toward an answer, the essay compares personal and cinematic examples of East German repairing in the 1980s with French repairing in the 1960s (Lévi-Strauss) and US-American repairing in the 1970s (Pirsig). The results reveal both aspects of repairing shared across modern industrial societies and different motives, such as the aim of repairing aesthetic deficiencies, behind many kinds of repairing in East Germany, including to upcycling and do-it-yourself.
