Abstract

In the 1990ies, Hartmut Winkler expounded the problems of a theoretical bifurcation occurring in the history of media studies: «technology-centered versus ‹anthropological›» media research. The sociologies usually referred to as «actor-network-theory» (ant) meanwhile succeeded in developing a heuristic toolbox, that bypasses the dichotomy altogether. This contribution presents media ethnographic research (on ICT localization in Lahore/Pakistan), that borrows from the ant-toolbox. The author argues, that in so doing it becomes possible to reformulate central insights of media studies without referring to problematic a priori postulates.
