Article:
Datenvisualisierung zwischen Sichtbarmachung, Verzerrung und Selbstermächtigung

Author(s): Parnow, Jonas

Abstract

Despite its widespread use in the pop cultural context and its heavy use in the commercial and scientific field, data visualisation as a tool and methodology has not yet been critically examined much. On a practical level, I would like to point out approaches for a reflective debate. These reflections are intended to refute the widespread assumption that data objectively depict reality. Using some examples, visualisations from pop cultural contexts will be examined for their distortions. With the quantification of every sphere of life and the centralisation of interpretative sovereignty over these data sets, an increasing power imbalance is developing in society. In response to this, I would like to present projects in the further course of this article that use visualisation for self-empowerment and critique of this order and can thus serve as tools for democratisation.
