Abstract

This article sheds light on the phenomenon of gendered media industries. It starts off a brief look into the research topic of gender and diversity in Media Industry Studies and moves on to work through current industry debates and available studies on gender and diversity by focusing on the film and television industry in Germany. The piece argues along the lines of myths, that are often repreated within the industry in an attempt to explain the underrepresentation of women and minorities in the film business. By presenting facts and statistics from a range of recent international studies, it aims to debunk these myths and to highlight strategies to reach cultural change within the industry towards a gender equal and diverse film Industry.
