Schwarzbilder. Notizen zu einem filmbildtheoretischen Problem

Abstract

Black is the colour of the night, and a moment of blackness intermits fade-in and fade-out. The black of the screen is not yet an image, even though we are hearing the voices. The black screen can be an image if it shows the fact that nothing is to be seen. Black frames are elementary means of cinematographic composition and signification, with syntacticas well as semantic functions. The article shows how blackness in films works; in the end, diverse functions of uses of black frames are systematized in a three-part model of supposition.
