Abstract

This essay addresses professionalization and consultancy at universities. Its point of departure is the observation that such services often fail to reach their addressees. The reason for this lies in a certain model of the professor as the representative of a deviant personnel which, according to a line of argumentation within the sociology of organizations, supports the argument that the university is a special institution. The essay will show that this relict is not an individual, characterological malfunction, but a systemic effect of the traditional university as an institution. Within certain disciplinary traditions, it has produced a type at the margins of ingeniousness that, for systemic reasons, has a hard time dealing with advice.
