Abstract

The production history of CRUISING (USA 1979) was dominated by controversies and misadventures: on the one hand, protests against a film project accused of homophobic representation of the gay scene, and on the other hand, censorship of the film’s explicit sex scenes. A historiographic approach that relies on the method of histoire croisée and considers the films «disturbing factors» as equal to its creative work analyzes the production of CRUISING as a structurally open process. Ultimately, the film itself can be regarded as but one artifact of its own production process – an indiscreet and non-discrete artifact that cannot be completely stabilized after all.
