Abstract

The design and implementation of architecture and interior design are heav- ily influenced by digital and data-based processes, particularly through the use of 3D visualization, CAD design, and 3D printing technologies. However, it is unexpected that the construction industry is one of the least digitized sectors of the economy. Still, heightened digitization and data-based design processes offer substantial potential for enabling climate-smart construction methods that conserve resources. New digital and data-based tools could significantly streamline the challenges of combining design quality, sustainability, and building codes. This article investigates the historical reasons for inadequate digitization in architecture and presents potential approaches for a sustainable design methodology based on three projects.
