Article:
Was will die Medienwissenschaft von der Kunst?

Abstract

The epistemological history of arts and the sciences are interconnected as far as both are media-related. Media theory itself developed (or emerged) together with the historically changing arts as first epistemological order. Since today the fine arts are involved in artistic research, they not only increasingly use media and reflect on their aesthetic manifestations, but remind media theory of the multiplicity of media articulations – and of their limits. On the basis of a short summary of the historical genesis of art and media theories I want to postulate that the arts should be more strongly integrated into media studies since they do not limit their scope to digital media and expose the contingency of media in their most advanced articulations.
