Abstract

The digital expression of fascism is not merely the object of research on extremism but crucially requires perspectives from media studies. Taking three examples – generically emerging symbols of fascism in digital worlds, the game-like logics of conspiracy theories and terrorists, and the mediatized prosecution of the insurrection of January 6, 2021 –this article combines considerations of games and gamification with the analysis of fascist or extreme right-wing agitation and violence. The examples share a counterintuitive thrust: these emergent and playful fascisms make it harder to isolate the «radicalized subject» behind right-wing agitation. The article proposes a changed perspective that is not limited to asking about culprits and ideologies of digital fascisms but rather understands media assemblages and structures themselves as vital constituents of a steadily growing and transmutating digital fascism.
