Der Nebel in der Wunderkammer. Zur Natur der Dinge im Anthropozän

Abstract

How are the material and imaginary dimensions of the Anthropocene currently collected and displayed? What challenges do traditional exhibition and collection practices face in this context? The article argues that current modes of mediation—particularly the ubiquitous Wunderkammer—reveal their deeply rooted European history and their role in consolidating Western aesthetic and epistemic frameworks. Furthermore, the article suggests that while museums grapple with finding adequate forms of representation for our crisis-ridden present, their practices and displays offer insights into specific characteristics of objects in the Anthropocene. Finally, the article suggests three pairs of specific characteristics of Anthropocene objects.
