Narrative Visualisierung in der Medizin

Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction in narrative (computer-generated) vis- ualization. Since data are an essential basis, an alternative term for narrative visualization is data-driven storytelling. This rather new and dynamic subfield of visualization is characterized by the incorporation of strategies from film, theater and literature, to present information in an interesting and engaging way. Special genres of narrative visualization were established, including data comics, data videos, slideshows and scrollytelling which is widely used in the online versions of journals. Narrative visualization may contribute to science communication. This is essential for areas that are relevant for broad audiences, such as climate research, astronomy, but also medicine. Based on our own experiences, we discuss primarily the design and reception of narrative visualizations related to medical topics, such as diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
