Dressing the Chair. Dresscodes, Personencodes und Moden in academia

Abstract

This essay scrutinizes the role of clothing, fashion, and corporeality in academic institutions and discusses the criteria according to which more or less stabile codes of attire might be constituted. How are generational, personal, or gender differences marked by the signifiers of clothing in the academic context? Which stereotypical images of academics arise in the process, and how might they be overcome? Taking these questions as its starting point, the essay discusses dress codes as well as anti-conformist and original self-stagings that can be interpreted as signifiers of significant transformations in power relations and the attribution of roles in academia.
