Abstract

The article takes up the premise of a productive power of media technologies in order to expand this well-known premise of German media studies towards an antiracist analysis. Using the example of passtags used during the German occupation of what is now Namibia, the article shows how the construction of technological information apparatuses is related to processes of racialization. With Sylvia Wynter’s critique of the monohumanism of Western theorizing, the article constructs a view of race as/and technology and thus describes a possibility of antiracist analysis of media information apparatuses and objects. These can illustrate missing pieces within archives, but they can also provide an opportunity for critical fabulations.
