Book:
Ein Jahrhundert der Verunsicherung. Medienkomparatistische Analysen

Abstract

According to Susan Sontag, the 20th century ”was born and died in Sarajevo“. After the two World Wars, the Cold War and the Yugoslav War, this fact seems to be relevant through the whole of Europe. It shows its implications in the aesthetics of terror. The book primarily analyses works from the Alps-Adriatic region, which use these aesthetics as an anticipation, as an explanation, as a warning, as an appeal (works by Stefan Zweig, Gabriele d´Annunzio, Miroslav Krleza, Thomas Mann, Roman Polanski, Władysław Szpilman, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Tarsem Singh, Derek Jarman, Giuseppe Tornatore, Ferdinand von Schirach, Slavenka Drakulić, Jasmila Zbanić, Danis Tanović, Oliviero Toscani, U2). These various works unmask the 20th century as a successor to the 16th century, as a century of insecurity and uncertainty.
