From almost the beginning of the evolution of the literate mind, there has been cause for anxiety regarding new communications technologies, be it applied in everyday life or more recently, in the classroom. Lately, worries about cognitive overload, distraction, retribalization, and futile clicking instead of intense cognitive work, amongst other concerns, have been present in both laypersons’ and specialists’ discussions. And indeed, different environmental challenges can modify our cognitive setting. But, I suggest that the question is not one of how to abandon the side-effects of new technologies, but rather of how we can adapt emerging new technologies in accordance with our ever-changing needs. In the present paper I will suggest our anxieties are rooted in the ideals of the literate mind and will delineate an alternative image of human intelligence based on philosophical recognitions and some recent findings in cognitive- and neuropsychologyen
