Video: Exploring ICONCLASS. A Comprehensive System for Cultural Content Classification
Abstract
In this HERMES Open Colloquium session Hans Brandhorst and Etienne Posthumus will be talking about “Exploring ICONCLASS: A Comprehensive System for Cultural Content Classification”. The ICONCLASS classification system for visual arts and other cultural objects is used by numerous museums and libraries worldwide to provide subject access to their collections. Its vocabulary covers topics far beyond traditional cultural heritage domains and enables end-users to search content more systematically. In this session, the speakers introduce the principles of the cultural content classification system and share updates on the recent revision of ICONCLASS, including the launch of its Linked Open Data (LOD) version. Furthermore, they discuss how these developments are shaping new opportunities for the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector and beyond.
