Although memes have become an integral part of digital culture, they have reached a completely new dimension in the context of political debate in recent years. Especially as instruments of right-wing politics and vehicles of far-right extremist messages, they have become dominant in recent times. On the basis of two examples, the American presidential election campaign of 2016 and the Christchurch-mass shooting in 2019, the article analyses the mechanisms that make them so central for political purposes.
