Schwarze ›Andersheit‹/weiße Norm. Rassistisch-koloniale Repräsentationsformen in EZA-Spendenaufrufen

Developmental non-government organisations shape the representation of Blackness and Africa in the public sphere. The development industry – with its colonial heritage – is continually confronted with the accusation of repro-ducing colonial pictorial traditions and racist stereotypes with its images. Thus contributing to the legitimation of current societal and global power relations. To examine how these forms of representation are involved in the construction, or maintenance, of Blackness and Africa as ›different‹ and devia-tion from the white norm. This article uses the iconographic/iconological method for a contextualised image interpretation of a charity-poster of the Austrian Caritas. Therefore, it appears that colonial logics of representation influence the images of Black people and Africa to this day.
