Light, colour, camera work — these are the main aspects for the aesthetic realisation of filmic material. Whether symbolically reserved, poetically fancy or clean documental — the visual arrangement influences decisively the au-dience’s mood and is therefore an integral part of the narrative style: The camera as narrating authority. Everything shown in the image and how it is presented is fundamental for generating meaning. The filmic design elements are essential for the successful communication between film and audience. They direct the audience’s view and work with specific filmic codes, which are to be decoded. The design elements determine the film’s aesthetics and are responsible for emotionalising the viewer. This essay focuses on the visual composition of a movie and puts an emphasis on the following three aspects: The obvious field of pictorial design, the sub-textual field of lighting as well as the subtle field of colour.
