The article examines the interplay of metagaming practices of players and the balancing procedures with which developers and publishers respond. This reciprocal process manifests itself as a playful negotiation of the conditions framing the respective games themselves. However, it also comprises the contexts in which game and play are (un)intentionally embedded. Using the example of the blitzchung-controversy, which unexpectedly linked the game Hearthstone to the Honk Kong protest of 2019, the article reveals the political dimensions of metagaming and balancing as forms of democratic voice and restrictive governance.
