Discussing the survey „How White is German-Language Media Studies?,“ this essay outlines its methodological approach, sheds light on its background, and presents its main findings. The results show a strong disparity between White and PoC researchers and teachers. However, it also reveals that many respondents did not position themselves in categories such as White or PoC. The essay also explores methodological aspects of the study design: specifically, the prompt for participants to situation themselves according to a number of categories for self-identification. This approach is innovative, yet it may also have led to issues due to subsequent interferences, as participants could expand on their self-identification freely while simultaneously bypassing putative unmarked categories of self-identification.
