The Oculus Rift brought the desire for designed virtual environments back into focus. The head mounted display from Oculus VR provides VR goggles for the masses, which are not currently available on the market. At the institute for immersive media, located at the university of applied sciences Kiel, the Oculus Rift is used in research as well as in teaching. This article will provide impressions and insights on the use of Oculus Rift and illustrates, that the technology of VR applications can deliver pioneering media content. Further, an exploration of the research field VR is provided. Finally, a look at future options for the use of virtual reality in teaching and everyday life is offered.
