The article focuses on the West Berlin State Library, which opened in 1978. Starting with the reading room of the library as its "reading landscape," the article traces the concepts of landscape that helped reorient the organization of library knowledge in the postwar period. Hans Scharoun’s urban planning idea of a Stadtlandschaft (cityscape) and the cybernetically charged business model of the Bürolandschaft (office landscape) made their way into the library, where they shaped academic working practices. The multilayered concept of landscape shows how libraries developed a new self-image in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s and 70s based on principles of movement and logistics of books.
