Abstract

In the diverse media landscape of the 21st century, the media usage of adolescents is frequently subject to discourses of cultural pessimism. Younger generations seemingly have little or no interest in journalism or political news coverage. Their alleged restriction to influencers, YouTube or Instagram was not far from a culture of disinformation. However, it is often neglected that on the one hand high-quality information is also distributed via these platforms. On the other hand, the role of classic media institutions is largely disregarded. For that reason, this article deals with the question of how quality journalism perceives younger target groups. It argues with two expert interviews that “old media” such as the Austrian Public Broadcasting Service (ORF) must not neglect young audiences, but contribute to a more inclusive and participatory journalism.
