Article:
How to counter – Mapping als Praxis einer aktivistischen Raumproduktion

Abstract

This paper focuses on the cartographic representation of spaces as instruments of social construction and power. It questions whether maps are merely neutral depictions of geographical realities or actively influence human intentions and social dynamics. Based on critical cartography, the article highlights the close interplay of power and knowledge within cartographic discourses. The emphasis is on the use of maps as means of controlling and reproducing social hierarchies. Particularly in the global context, this connection seems relevant as maps not only convey information but also actively shape perceptions. The impact of digital technology on map creation and the abundance of available geodata are given special consideration. Can maps truly be seen as mere tools for orientation, or do they play a more profound role in shaping opinions and power dynamics in society?
