Article:
Hörende Maschinennetzwerke. Auditive Medienästhetiken unscheinbarer Signale

Abstract

The media technological reality at the beginning of the 21st century is made by a multi-scalar and fractal ubiquity of media infrastructures, which pervade our environment from the realm of micrometers up to many kilometers. The article argues that for understanding the ubiquitous media networks an epistemic grasp via the concept of the signal might turn out to be productive for critical methods of media studies. Furthermore it argues that particularly the method of listening – as a mode of human cognition in the discourse of media studies still underestimated – could become an integral part for a vein of media studies, which is inspired by signal processing. This will be done by listing some examples from the history of technical media, in which auditory knowledge and media practices played crucial roles. The article finally discusses and reflects the neccessity of aesthetic experimental systems for critical methods of media studies.
