Materialität | Immaterialität. Einleitung in den Schwerpunkt

Author(s): Holl, Ute

Abstract

After media studies initially marked its peripheral, parasitic, and productive position vis-à-vis other disciplines of the humanities and cultural studies by focusing on the materiality of media as discourse networks (Aufschreibesysteme), carriers, and transformers, more recent approaches have differentiated the model of an «in-between,» a diaphanous membrane that is not itself perceptible. In the genealogy of «trance media,» by contrast, investigations focused on the immaterial quality of a function or a balance of power, or on the effects of perception in relation to effects of media — while acknowledging that it is precisely the gap between the two that would be constitutive for media theory.
