‹Self›-Containment on Messy Grounds. ‹Selbst›-Begrenzung auf instabilem Terrain

Abstract

This paper explores technologies of containment through the lens of four very different scenarios: first, the film «Titane» (dir.: Julia Ducournau, FR/BE 2021) which features a self-contained (porous) brain; second, new sensitive contact zones that feature in the film «Annihilation» (dir.: Alex Garland, GB/US 2018), and in which the mixing of body and surroundings is more than skin deep. With the synaptic chip TrueNorth in the third scenario, we move to a different level of reality, this time not dealing with a movie but with technical developments in neuroscience. Lastly, the level of reality changes again with brief concluding remarks on a post-operative experience.
