Piraterie

Abstract

The essay offers a meditation on media piracy as a tool and subject of academic research based on the Afterword of the anthology «Pirate Essays» that the author has edited. Taking his personal experiences as a professor of media studies and buyer of pirated media in the Philippines and Cambodia as a starting point, the author discusses several theoretical approaches towards an understanding of the phenomenon of piracy with reference to Friedrich Kittler, Lawrence Lessig, Mark Dery and Henry Jenkins. The text is also a call to make piracy a subject of media studies.
