While Media ecology developed as an academic discourse in the 1960s and 1970s, its discursive history dates back to certain media and cultural techniques of biochemistry and physiology as well as to new ‹organismic› metatheories of the early 20th Century. A new organizational knowledge emerged on laboratory treadmills and in nomographs as well as in the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead and in the biochemistry of Lawrence Henderson, a knowledge that is no longer based on substance or energy, but on data processing. Media ecology is a symptom of a radically industrialized and data processed environment and its épistéme.
