The article focuses on two ways of creating/designing the world: media and practices of abstraction and generalization are examined as cultural techniques of the plural and are distinguished from a different method of close-viewing, the cultural technique of the singular. What can be perceived, if one thing ressembles the other? What meets the eye if every thing seems to exist only once in the whole world? How can one speak, if every object lives ist lonely life on an island? Between universal and private languages there is a line which this article tries to elaborate through paradigmatic examples. With a microscope gaze on the media of designing the world, the artical discusses the fact that under different historical circumstances, from the oceans of conformity suddenly an interest sparks in the aberration, the irritation and the new.
