How does robotics make technology acceptable – in individual man-machine-situations as well as on a societal level? Sabina Jeschke is a Professor and Vice Dean at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen, the largest technical university in Germany. In this interview, she explains how contemporary robotics faces problems of usability and acceptance. New concepts of closeness, intimate relations between man and machine as well as ethical questions inform the questions being asked within the field of mechanical engineering. The relations between engineering and key concepts of the humanities also play an important role. Sabina Jeschke provides insight into how mankind will describe itself in the near future, as machines become more and more pervasive.
