Like Larkin, Adrian Johns focuses on the nexus between practices and institutions – specifically the »cassette culture« involving popular exchange of mix-tapes and what he calls the Intellectual Property Defense Industry. The legacy of cassette culture is more mixed than scholars have tended to believe, since it encouraged both everyday creativity and industrial efforts to shut down such agency. The cassette marks a turning point both for user creativity and industrial control because it contributed substantially to a change in the status of homes as sites of production and reproduction. »Home piracy« was a key paradox of its era, something both outlawed and abundant.
