Austausch dringend gesucht! Contentproduzierende, Zuschauer*innen und Medienwissenschaft

This paper deals with the difficulties of TV production companies (here named content producers to distinguish them from broadcasters and distributors) to acquire knowledge about the audience of their formats. In order to systematize viewers, telemetric data have been collected. However, these data have to be purchased and interpreted, which is already hard to realize for smaller production companies. Furthermore, the content producers very often regard quantitative data as being anonymous and perceive qualitative research in a more positive manner. Still, they hardly commission such qualitative studies, mainly for financial reasons, but also for a lack of knowledge on the possible insights and on the potential to integrate findings already in the story development. However, academic reception studies could fill this gap. Therefore, it would be desirable that media scholars were to declare a clear intention to get involved with the needs of the media industry.
