MATRIX by Andy and Larry Wachowski was one of the most successfull movies of the 90s. The topic of this thesis is how the film relates on the one hand to the ambivalence of perception in western cultural history, on the other hand establishes binary oppositions free of ambivalence like the redeemer, the chosen one and eternal love that defeats death. MATRIX combines the theory of perception with the virtual technology of the 90s and thus draws a line between Platon's cave analogy and modern computer games. To analyse these aspects as cornerstones of the success of the movie under consideration of cultural history in the western world is the goal of this thesis.
