Es geht um die Frage, ob und inwieweit die Moderne – verstanden als die ›Klassische Moderne‹, die eine Zeitspanne vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts beschreibt – ›ihre‹ Bilder nicht nur geprägt hat, dann wäre es ein ›Stil‹, sondern inwiefern diese Bilder wiederum die Moderne erst ermöglicht haben und diese kulturel-le Unternehmung ggf. immer noch unterstützen. In diesem Fall wären die Bilder nicht nur Medien, sondern soziale Werkzeuge. Für die Bildwissenschaft ergeben sich damit zwei Fragestellun-gen: zum einen, wie das ›Bildverstehen‹ beim Individuum entsteht und an-hand welcher Parameter es fortentwickelt wird, und zum anderen, wie be-stimmte Kollektive bestimmte Bilderformen ausbilden und diese wiederum zur Konstituierung ihrer Zusammengehörigkeit bzw. Differenzierung nutzen. Letztendlich beschäftigt sich dieses Heft mit der Frage, ob Bilder (und die Kenntnis von ihnen) für das Verständnis der Moderne – verstanden als indivi-duelle und kollektive Sinnkonstruktion einer Epoche – unersetzlich sind.The topic of this IMAGE volume "Image and modern age" focusses on the pragmatic side of image science. It scouts out the base of our image under-standing which is developed by the concrete use of the image primarily in the social interaction. It is about the question whether and how far modern age – understood as ›classic modern age‹ which describes the period from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century – not only stamped its images but also to what extend those images made modern age possible and still support cultural development. In this case images would not be media only but social tools. Out of this two questions arise for image science: how does image understanding come into being at the individual and which parameters support its develop-ment? How do specific collectives develop specific images forms and use them to constitute their unity or their distinction?
