Diese Arbeit ver-sucht zu belegen, dass trotz erkennbarer Anzeichen von sexueller Gewalt eine genaue kritische Betrachtung in der Rezeption des Bildes bisher nicht statt-fand. Um den Stellenwert und die Bedeutung der Fotografie besser zu verste-hen, werden daher in einem ersten Schritt ihre Entstehungsbedingungen nachgezeichnet. Die anschließende Analyse der Fotografie erfolgt im Rahmen der Visuellen Semiotik nach Roland Barthes und leitet über zu einer genaue-ren Klärung des Begriffs ›Rape Culture‹ und der Bedeutung dieses Begriffs im Kontext von Eisenstaedts Fotografie. Die sich hieran anschließende Kritik der bisherigen Rezeption der Fotografie mahnt eine kritische Distanz sowohl zur Fotografie als auch zu der in ihr gezeigten Situation an. Insgesamt wird dieser Beitrag die These zu begründen versuchen, dass V-J DAY IN TIMES SQUARE einen Akt der sexuellen Gewalt innerhalb einer ›Rape Culture‹ darstellt.The photograph V-J DAY IN TIMES SQUARE by Alfred Eisenstaedt is a symbol of the end of the Second World War for many people. This paper tries to prove that the reception of the picture lacks a critical reflection despite cognizable indications of sexual violence. To get a better understanding of the signifi-cance and the meaning of the photograph the first step will be a recapitula-tion of the conditions of the origin. The following analysis takes place within the framework of the visual semiotic according to Roland Barthes and bridges to a more precise explanation of the term ›Rape Culture‹ and the meaning of it in the context of Eisenstaedt’s photograph. The following critique of the previous reception of the photograph exhorts to a critical distance to both, the photograph and the presented situation.
