Making use of the potential of virtual embodiment, i.e. being immersed in a space as a personal avatar, allows for innovative new forms of collaboration. In this paper, we present a framework that serves as a systematic formalization of collaboration elements in virtual environments. We thus provide a virtual collaboration blueprint to guide users in designing and implementing virtual collaboration patterns tailored to their needs and constraints (for example in Second Life or OpenSim). We present four collaboration pattern examples as a result of the application of the framework, and point out future research directions for this emerging domain.engIn CopyrightCollaborative workingvirtual environmentvirtual embodiment300600Visual Collaboration and Learning Patterns in 3D Environments: Emergence, Elements, Examples10.25969/mediarep/19827978-3-902719-65-2
