Abstract

Around 1800 all three modern methods of central heating emerge, based on the convective potential of water, steam and air. Drawing on built and written examples, this paper describes how thereby a concept of physical transmission enters architecture, carrying profound constructive as well as discursive consequences: Under the conditions of central air heating buildings begin to be planned as thermodynamic machines and challenged for their media effects.
