Die Technologie urbanisieren. Der Mobilitätskomplex aus der Perspektive der Neuen Netzwerktheorie

Author(s): Lovink, Geert

Abstract

In this essay the author explores the ‹urbanizing technology› concept from a critical internet perspective. What are the long-term implications of dense infrastructure in which the tracing of (local) mobility coincides with digital wireless and broadband connectivity? What does it mean when networks become more and more local? Starting from the earlier ‹critique of mapping› that is part of the larger project entitled ‹distributed aesthetics› the article goes through a range of examples such as debates inside the RFID community, locative media initiatives and total immobility proposals to examine how we can develop critical practices inside this rapidly growing field of dense, local infrastructures. «If you want to set things in motion, don't move.» Will this be our new political and aesthetic agenda?
