Medienbildung braucht Medienwissenschaft

Abstract

Media studies findings are essential for media literacy. They include various concepts, such as a differentiated notion of media and an understanding of media dynamics, which should be part of media-related general knowledge. However, it is a challenge for media studies to share its expertise due to politically defined standards (such as the media literacy frameworks) and to not undermine its own positions that work against conventions and standardizations. Media literacy contributes to social (in)justice, it can reinforce or counteract it. Expert knowledge in media studies in particular is needed to ensure educational justice and opportunities for participation in media literacy processes for all target groups of lifelong education.
