Ikonografie der Vielfalt – Der Imagefilm der Stadt Ulm 2019 als postklassifikatorische Neuerzählung der Gesellschaft

Abstract

Starting with a brief sketch of the paradoxes of the visual representation of diversity, the article deals with the image film of the city of Ulm from 2019, which led to controversial debates shortly after its release. The multimodal based analysis is conducted from a semiotic-text stylistic perspective with a focus on narrative structures on the one hand and the multimodal generation of meaning on the other. The analysis shows that the image film, due to its special way of making, succeeds in representing diversity in a way, which dissolves the above-mentioned paradoxes: Existing hegemonic-binary logics are replaced by deconstructivist-ternary ones and classificatory spatial boundaries are abolished. As a result, a utopia is drawn that equals a post-classificatory re-narration of society.
